The Chain records event surrounding the management of Lung Fa Tang, a mental institution run by a private religious organization in Taiwan. Lung Fa Tang has been involved in issues concerning social welfare management, mentaln institution management in the private sector, political and religious tugs-of-war, human rights, and matters of humanistic cincern, public sanitation, healing through scientific methods, and faith healing. These issues, however, are common in other corners of the world. In Chang's work, members of the mental institution directly face the camera in chained pairs in a standard posture as though having a photo taken for a mug shot, where regaedless of the time and space, only the camera lens separates the spirits of the subjects and the photographer. The emoty space between is the intersection of the forever-dim glow and darkness in the stage of man's civility.
