Light Play in Taiwan’s Silicon Valley
Tzu-Wen, Chen

2013

Toning

Racing

Since its establishment in central Taiwan, the Central Taiwan Science Park (CTSP) has been the cradle of developing industries such as optoelectronics, integrated circuit, precision machinery, and biotechnology.  Of these, the optoelectronics industry has drawn the most attention.  The CTSP has not only introduced semiconductors and optoelectronics industries, with the future addition of petrochemical and metal industries, it’s role will become even more vital and will mark another zenith for the high-tech industries of Central Taiwan.  Therefore, the Chinese title of this work, “Xi Guang” serves as a metaphor for the “glory of Taiwan’s Silicon Valley”.  Inspired by optoelectronics, the park’s most important industry, this work will be a combination of various interactive games, hence the theme, “Light Play in Taiwan’s Silicon Valley”.
This artwork will be divided into two pieces: “Racing” and “Toning”.  Flowing contours and geometric shapes, such as diamonds and circles, will be employed to form the shape of plants that are technological in nature.  It is a way to demonstrate the subject of this installation, “Dancing with Nature”.  The spirit of CTSP will thus be portrayed through this vivid image of incorporating and dancing with Nature.  In the work, “Racing”, as many as five people will be able to interact with the work by pedaling the generator as a means of producing the light by which the winner is judged.  “Toning” is a game of tacit understanding.  Depending on the strength of the three primary colors that have been generated, the pedal powered generators will give forth lights of constantly changing colors.

Window View of Life- On Top of the Tree of Butterflies
David Gerstein

2015
Stainless Steel, paint

This work serves as a part of the public art project, A Window View of Life, for the Taichung Park dormitory building. The objective of planning for Central Taiwan Science Park is to create a green park for ecological conservation and technological advancement that features sustainable methods of development and a local style. The rich natural ecology of Mt. Dadu also serves as a path of migration for Taiwanese milkweed butterflies. The shape and colors of the work are both minimalistic and complex. With a pure white color base, the colorful and lively rhythm of butterflies is expressed. Indeed, this tree of butterflies becomes a significant symbol signifying the integration of production and ecology, and sets a good paradigm for the science park.

Window View of Life- The Chase on Squirrel Slope
David Gerstein

2015
Stainless Steel, paint

This work serves as a part of the public art project, A Window View of Life, for the Taichung Park dormitory building. Located next to the sailboat-like water tower landmark, commonly known as Squirrel Slope, of Taichung Park, the work exudes a strong sense of leisure and relaxation. Vivid colors and rhythmic lines offer a warm invitation for people to approach and view it.  Freely shuttling between the undulating slopes, they can interact with the work.  They may also choose to sit down on the sloped ground and enjoy a beautiful and overlooking view of the entire area.  Scattered across the front and back sides of the work, bicycles exhibit the relaxed lifestyle at Central Taiwan Science Park, while mirroring the cyclists riding and pushing upwards through Squirrel Slope.

Window View of Life- A Window View of Life, Blooming
David Gerstein

2015
Stainless Steel, paint
This work serves as a part of the public art project, A Window View of Life, for the Taichung Park dormitory building.  Through visuals generated by three window-shaped works and the environment, the dormitory area becomes an analogy for the inside of a window, while the park areas act as the outside of one. The artist utilizes common animals along with plants and flowers from Mt. Dadu to constitute a window view in which viewers may interact across it. The dormitory area itself acts as a place for people to relax, re-energize, enjoy moments of quiet reflection, and readjust themselves to an original state of life after a busy day.  This work corresponds basic human needs with the identity of a home “inside the window” and a “breath of air” on the outside.  It also echoes the project’s proposition of “A Window View of Life”.
Flow- Connection
Liang-Jen, Lee

2016
Painted steel structure, stainless steel panels, stainless steel sphere, copper, pebbles

“Flow – Connection” was inspired by scientific development and the logo of the Central Science Park, incorporating the flow of knowledge, technology and how these bring Taiwan and the world closer together as integral elements of the work. The red color alludes to the red earth of Dadu Mountain and gives voice the hope and energy with which technology redefines the future. The solid H-beam steel is bent to create simple flowing lines while the reflective side of the stainless steel sphere reflects the geometric beauty of the lines, constant changes in people and vehicles, surrounding buildings and the sky. People are invited to walk under and around the work to experience first hand its power and momentum.

Golden Mountain
Liang-Jen, Lee

2016
Painted steel structure, stainless steel panels, stainless steel spheres

The yellow steel structure extends into the horizon like to the outline of a mountain, its magnificent luster reminiscent of the bountiful riches provided by Dadu Mountain. This highlights the harmonious coexistence between the urban treasure trove of the Central Science Park and its natural setting. The two ridges allude to the way in which Jade Mountain and Dadu Mountain overlap, a symbol of the connection between the park and Taiwan, while the spheres represent global connectivity. The surrounding stainless steel panels and irregular laser cut depictions showcase representations of science and technology, ecology and culture relating the story of the Central Science Park.

Painted stainless steel panels, pebbles

“Windswept” was inspired by the flow of the wind, water and red earth on Dadu Mountain elements easily identified with the area. The work conveys the vast sweep of technological development, focusing on the future but also embracing the enduring power of nature and culture. The square frame captures the countless variations of blue sky, white clouds, wind and rain in the science park. At the same time, outer elements of the piece seem to float weightlessly skyward like kites. The work is an organic entity, imbued with the vitality of the location, passionately inviting people to experience the warmth of the Central Science Park.
